U.S.A Land of Limitations?
By: Nicholas Kristof
August 8th 2015
“We like to boast of America as the “land of opportunity,” and historically there is truth to that.” Nicholas Kristof
This quote is talking about how Americans like to say the United states being the land of opportunity. Personally I believe, that America is the land of opportunity because we have the ability to move up in society. We can be born into a poor family, lower class, and with hard work and dedication you can become middle class. This is relevant to the text because the author is talking about America being the land of opportunity.
“The chance of a person who was born to a family in the bottom 10 percent of the income distribution rising to the top 10 percent as an adult is about the same as the chance that a dad who is 5 feet 6 inches tall having a son who grows up to be over 6 feet 1 inch tall. It happens, but not often.” according to Alan Krueger
This quote is saying that it’s almost impossible to move up in society, it can happen but it's rare. Personally I believe, this quote is wrong. If you work hard, put in the time and effort you can achieve great things. This quote is relevant to the text because the author is talking about America being the land of opportunity and social classes.
“Talent is universal, but opportunity is not.” Nicholas Kristof
This quote is saying that anyone can have talent but not everyone has an opportunity to do what they want in life. Personally I believe, this quote is true. Anyone can have talent but not everyone has the resources they need to proceed with their talent. This quote is relevant to the text because the author is talking about America being the land of opportunity. He is also discussing his friend that recently died, who had a hard life and worked hard to try to make it better.
Point to share:
“Disadvantage is less about income than environment.”
I have mixed feelings about this quote. On the one hand, money is extremely important in our society and you can not survive without it. You need money for everything, food, clothing, medicine and much much more. But sometimes money doesn’t matter because your environment is what turns you into the person you are. If you grow up with parents who are never around or don’t care for you, you grow up quickly and learn quickly how to take care of yourself. If you grow up with parents who are always there for you and take care of you really well it will take you longer to grow and mature because you have time to be a kid whereas the person without good parents has to learn to fend for themselves at an early age. Disadvantage comes in many ways for different people.
