Ted talk, by Jamila Lyiscott Link: https://www.ted.com/talks/jamila_lyiscott_3_ways_to_speak_english/transcript?nolanguage=he1
The women is talking about race and languages. She doesn't want to be judged for her race or the way she speaks. Even the most "articulate" people can look and sound dumb. The 3 languages she speaks is home, school and friends. Everywhere she goes she has to change the way she talks.

At The Met there are two languages spoken English and Spanish. The Met has a 44% hispanic ethnic background. During my time at The Met I heard several students speaking spanish to one another. I am currently in Spanish 102 so I am able to get bites and pieces of what students are saying to each other. Some students are learning english and have a hard time trying to speak english so they have students who are better english speakers tell the teacher what they want or need. Students make flashcards with vocab words to help them learn english. The Met is very open to all ethnicities, the walls are covered with flags, maps, food and dances of countries around the world. The relates to Garcia and the benefits of translanguaging. Students are helping one another communicate and learning two languages.
The students at The Met were reading a book called “The hate you give us” it’s about an african american girl who attends an integrated school. She continuously goes back and forth from her rich school to her poor neighborhood and she ends up witnessing her best friends murder. This book discusses race, class and gender. At the time I was volunteering I hadn’t read the book, a student I was working with began telling me how much he enjoyed the book they were reading. After he told me about the book I was interested myself and actually read it. It was an incredible story of a very brave young women who finds her voice and stands up for what it right. This relates to Johnson and it’s important to talk about issues of privilege, power and difference so that we can work towards a more just and respectful world.
The Met empowers students to take charge of their learning to become responsible citizens and life long learners. The Met is a service learning school. Students have internships 2 out of 5 days of school. Students pick their internship based on their interests which helps them decide their career path and future. While volunteering at The Met I worked with a boy who was interested in baking. He wants to go to school for culinary arts, we discussed colleges he could attend to pursue his interests. We found a local bakery that he could do his internship. We designed his internship and project around baking. He is hoping to learn valuable baking skills and how to bake a cake from scratch. His project is after learning how to make a cake from scratch he will sell pieces of the cake at school and donate the money to the bakery he interned. This relates to Kahne and Westheimer because The Met is a service learning school that focus on both charity and change.

The Met Schools seems like such an interesting place to volunteer at. I love how they are focused on the students needs. I also picked the same topic of kids speaking two languages.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the Met school would be a great experience and I can relate to the topic of bilingualism at my site as well.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like your school has many stories that you can connect to the authors that we have read in class. You're doing a great job
